Women chefs are surging ahead in the top jobs in the culinary profession. While women have cooked for the families of presidents and kings, none have been named to be the head chef whether at court or in the White House. The illustrious restaurants and hotels in Europe and the U.S. Have long depended upon women in a housekeeper uniform to serve their customers, but very few of them have ever appointed women to administrative chef positions. Although women make up more than half of food aid employees, less than one in five women work as chefs or head cooks. Many critics say that women in the culinary profession face serious discrimination: women are often permitted only entry level jobs, and they are not permitted to rise to positions where they could furnish serious competition with the men. In America women have always been cooks in neighborhood restaurants, but the chefs in elegant restaurants have always been exclusively male. In England women have run the kitchens of many noble families, but chefs in royal households are always men. The Royal community of Chefs has never admitted a singular woman to membership.
However, this situation is changing. In order to expand the cause of talented women in chef pants, the Women Chefs and Restaurateurs association, together with Olivado Oil, are now sponsoring an yearly competition called Chef Quest - Celebrating Women Chefs. Helene Kennan, the president of Women Chefs and Restaurateurs, says that Wcr members are among the most creative in the profession and as women they understand the equilibrium of good health and good taste. Agreeing to Chris Nathan, the founder of Olivado Oil, the purpose of the contest is not just to celebrate creative recipes. It is also to promote healthy eating and to aid women chefs to expand in the culinary profession.
